My new project!
calling all boygenius fans

I’m back with a quick missive today to share officially my new project: a history and analysis of the music of the boygenius trio (Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus), song-by-song. I’ve started with Julien’s debut, Sprained Ankle. It’s been fun, going through archives of her old band and exploring the religious references in her lyrics.
You can read the first post here on my Patreon for free, and you can sign up as a free member to get them directly in your inbox!
The plan is to post them first on Patreon, mostly free for everyone, and then eventually edit and migrate them over to my website/blog. We’re going old-fashioned, in the vein of classic blogging projects I love. (I still have to decide if I want to change my website overall, though.)
Also, if you haven’t heard yet, Julien Baker and Torres released the delightful lesbian country song “Sugar in the Tank” (music video), and Lucy Dacus released two new songs with an album coming in March—”Ankles” (music video) and “Limerance.”
This and That
I have had trouble reading lately, but I started the audiobook of The Name of This Band is R.E.M. (surprise, I’m a big R.E.M. fan) and I am going to a book event next week for the new Emily Austin book, We Could Be Rats.
Severance is back! This show really captivated me when the first season aired three years ago, and critics say this season lives up to it all, so I’m excited! The first episode was good, but I need more…
We saw Moana 2, and it was obviously meant to be a TV series but it was enjoyable enough for a sequel? The songs were so forgettable, though. Meanwhile, we thought it would be fun to watch all the animated features in order so we also watched Snow White. And I created a Letterboxed to keep track, but those are the only two movies I’ve seen this year (not sharing because I’m only using it for myself—no ratings or anything).
Feeling pretty frustrated and hopeless heading into this week, so I’ve found Greg Pak’s newsletter with its little tasks very helpful.
